If you've been in the printing business more then a month you've probably heard that phrase at least once from a customer. If you're like us at Patterson Printing who has been in business for 30 years now, then you've heard it a million times. When it comes to colors in the printing industry whether it's for business cards, labels, banners or t-shirts it's not as simple as the color chart we all learn in Kindergarten. Blue is just not blue. There is Aero Blue, Signal Blue, Light Blue, Navy Blue, Steel Blue, Cobalt Blue, And that's just a few off the top of my head. There are literally 100's of different shades of every color which makes it tough when a customer calls over the phone to place an order and they say they want business cards with blue writing. Even once a color is established it can still be tricky when it comes to proofs and the customer signing off on them and approving. At Patterson Printing in Bridgeview, IL. we do a lot of design work and all our computers are set up with dual monitors to make it easy to work from. As with the color wheels, no two monitors are the same either. What looks like one color on my monitor may look different on your end when you open and approve a proof. We set up 2 different monitors as shown in the picture below. Even though it's the same artwork in each screen, they both look different. You may think you are getting one color when it reality you are getting something else. If at all possible we try and have customer come in and place their orders so they can see exactly what color item they are getting and we can match it to fit their needs. Of course, if you know the ins and outs of the printing world and are familiar with the Pantone or PMS color charts you can order that way but a large majority of our customers don't know. Sometimes a simple visit to our office or just knowing that almost every computer monitor out there is different and the colors you see on your screen may not match, may mean the difference between a happy and upset customer. I wanted purple... That is purple...
